I also own the 7th edition of this textbook, and I consider the 8th edition to be an improvement over the 7th edition on many factors: (1) the book has been streamlined from 18 to 15 chapters; (2) the cases have been updated to make use of more contemporary business concepts; (3) more of the key concepts have been bolded in a different color font, which improves the readability; and (4) the chapters have been reordered to more closely follow the steps taken in developing a business plan.

I have utilized the text “Entrepreneurship: Theory, Process, and Practice” for an entrepreneurship class I teach, with positive results. The first part of the text explores the basic theoretical aspects of entrepreneurship. As the text progresses, its focus moves from a theoretical emphasis toward equipping the reader with tools that can be utilized to start a venture. There are discussions on how to develop a feasibility analysis, important financial statements that every entrepreneur should know, and basic marketing techniques, among others. The case studies are interesting and engaging, and are received well by the students. Indeed, several of my students mentioned that they have utilized the text for outside interests–including starting a business and starting a fraternity. I highly recommend this text.

As a university teacher of entrepreneurship, I have found the eighth edition of this book to be remarkably effective in the classroom, in both stimulating interest in entrepreneurship and in equipping students with the basic tools and understanding they need to be successful in the entrepreneurial realm. The book is well organized and establishes a foundational basis for theoretical concepts of entrepreneurship prior to moving onto application and the development of practical skill sets necessary to actually start a new business. Additionally, the book is filled with contemporary examples of real startup anecdotes and commonplace business issues that make the book highly relevant and intriguing to students in building a bridge from the classroom to the real world. I heartily recommend this book and can speak from personal experience that students find it a great introductory work as well.

For an eighth edition $134 textbook, the reader might anticipate some degree of real, practical insight into entrepreneurship. Instead, a potential reader would be advised to expect 527 pages of lists, verbose contradictions, and unsophisticated exercises instructing the reader to mark the book (thereby lowering its resale price).
This book has the distinction of both oversimplifying mystifying its material. Overlapping lists and generalizations baffle the reader in both their simplicity and seeming contradiction; ultimately adding little to this reader’s understanding of entrepreneurship.
It may be that Kuratko’s intended audience has not reached college age, and that in attempting to clarify contradictory research for its benefit, he stripped his book of the inferences, strong assertions, and narrative that might have made it… readable.
Another speculation is that Kuratko has found his own special entrepreneurial niche – selling an overpriced and frequently “updated” textboook to unwitting professors and their disbelieving students.
The review reader might be advised to note the origin of other reviews (Bloomberg, Indiana). This is the location of University of Indiana, where Kuratko teaches.
